Background of the Study
Falls among elderly individuals are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in hospital settings. In Nigeria, as in many other countries, the elderly population is at heightened risk due to factors such as frailty, balance impairments, cognitive decline, and comorbidities. In Katsina State, the Federal Medical Centre plays a critical role in providing healthcare services to elderly individuals, many of whom are vulnerable to falls. Nurse-led interventions have been shown to be effective in preventing falls and minimizing their impact on elderly patients, but their implementation and outcomes remain under-researched in this context (Sani et al., 2023).
Nurses are at the forefront of fall prevention efforts, implementing strategies such as fall risk assessments, environmental modifications, patient education, and mobility assistance. Research suggests that tailored interventions led by trained nurses can reduce fall rates and enhance patient safety. Fall prevention strategies include ensuring adequate lighting, the use of assistive devices, regular monitoring of high-risk patients, and providing education on safe mobility (Yusuf & Abubakar, 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurse-led interventions on fall prevention among elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
Statement of the Problem
Falls among elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, pose significant risks to their health, including fractures, disability, and even death. Despite the implementation of general fall prevention strategies, the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions specifically tailored to this patient group has not been fully assessed. This study seeks to evaluate how nurse-led interventions can reduce fall rates and improve the safety and well-being of elderly patients.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in preventing falls among elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
To identify the types of nurse-led interventions implemented for fall prevention in elderly patients.
To evaluate the outcomes of fall prevention strategies in terms of reduced fall rates and improved patient safety.
Research Questions
How effective are nurse-led interventions in preventing falls among elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
What types of nurse-led interventions are implemented for fall prevention in elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
What are the outcomes of nurse-led fall prevention interventions on patient safety in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce the incidence of falls among elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
The use of tailored fall prevention strategies by nurses improves patient safety and reduces the severity of fall-related injuries in elderly patients.
Nurse-led education and mobility training significantly enhance fall prevention among elderly patients in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly patients in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, specifically evaluating nurse-led interventions for fall prevention. Limitations may include variations in the types of interventions across different units of the hospital and potential challenges in tracking fall incidents consistently.
Definitions of Terms
Fall Prevention: Strategies and interventions designed to reduce the risk of falls and associated injuries among elderly individuals.
Nurse-Led Interventions: Healthcare interventions and strategies designed, implemented, and monitored by nurses to improve patient outcomes.
